Healing Moves in Spirals
Sometimes you think you’ve already healed something—until it shows up again. The same trigger. The same pattern. The same emotion you thought you were finally “done” with.
And suddenly you wonder:
Why am I back here again?
But what if you’re not back where you started? What if healing doesn’t move in a straight line at all?
Healing Can Look More Like a Spiral
A spiral circles back around, passing familiar places again and again—but never from exactly the same point.
Healing can be like that.
You may encounter an old wound, relationship pattern, fear, or belief and think, I’ve already dealt with this. And you have. But now you’re meeting it from somewhere new.
Maybe you recognize the trigger sooner. Maybe you understand what’s underneath it in a way you couldn’t before. Maybe the emotion still comes, but you’re able to stay with yourself instead of judging, avoiding, or becoming overwhelmed by it.
The experience may feel familiar.
But you are not the same person experiencing it.
Coming Back Around Isn’t Going Backward
We often imagine healing as a path forward.
We do the work. We understand the pattern. We heal it. We leave it behind. So when something resurfaces, it can feel like failure.
Why is this still here?
Shouldn't I be past this by now?
But a spiral gives us another way to understand what’s happening.
You may be circling something you’ve encountered before, but this time you bring everything you’ve learned since the last time you were here. More awareness. More self-compassion. More capacity. More choice.
Sometimes you can finally see a layer that simply wasn't available to you before. That isn't starting over.
That's going deeper.
Notice Where You Are on the Spiral
We tend to measure healing by what no longer happens.
I shouldn't feel this anymore.
This shouldn't trigger me.
I thought I had moved past this.
But perhaps a better measure is how you meet what happens when it comes around again.
Instead of asking:
“Why am I still dealing with this?”
Try asking:
What can I see now that I couldn't see before?
What feels different this time?
Am I responding differently?
What can I offer myself now that I couldn't then?
Is there another layer here that I'm finally ready to understand?
Sometimes the change will be obvious. Other times, you may need someone beside you who can help you recognize it.
That is part of how I approach my work—not to tell you that you should be finished with something, but to walk beside you as you become curious about where you are now, what has changed, and what this next turn of the spiral may be revealing.
You Haven’t Returned to the Beginning
Healing isn't about reaching a place where nothing ever hurts, nothing triggers you, and an old pattern never appears again. It's about how you meet yourself when it does.
You may recognize the scenery. You may even recognize the feelings. But look more closely.
You're not standing where you stood before.
You've lived more. Learned more. Felt more. Seen more. The spiral has brought you around again—but not back. And sometimes what feels like returning to an old place is actually an invitation to meet it from a deeper one.
The pattern may look the same.
But you are not the same person meeting it.
That's not going backward.
That's healing.
